Though this question is asked before for 11.10, it's still unanswered. I am using ubuntu 12.04 (on Dell Inspiron 1525, 2008 model) and facing the same problem:

The "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" file gives:
(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols.
I have another newer laptop (lenovo thinkpad T420 2011 model) which also has Ubuntu 12.04, but there everything is working fine. But don't know what to compare between working and not working laptops! Any help will be really appreciated.
